Substation
Overview
A Substation is a key component of the power system, responsible for transforming voltage levels, controlling power flow, and ensuring the safe and reliable distribution of electricity to consumers. Substations serve as the central link between power generation plants, transmission networks, and distribution systems. They contain advanced electrical equipment such as power transformers, switchgear, protection relays, busbars, control panels, and SCADA monitoring systems.
Modern substations are designed with robust grounding systems, automation technologies, and high-level protection schemes to ensure grid stability, minimize outages, and maintain the quality and safety of electrical energy.
Types of Substations
1. Based on Voltage Level
High Voltage Substations (HV): 110 kV – 132 kV
Extra High Voltage Substations (EHV): 220 kV – 400 kV
Ultra High Voltage (UHV): 500 kV and above
2. Based on Construction Type
AIS (Air Insulated Substation)
GIS (Gas Insulated Substation)
Hybrid Substations
Underground / Indoor Substations
3. Based on Function
Step-Up Substation (near power plants)
Step-Down Substation (near consumers)
Switching Substation
Distribution Substation
Industrial Substation
